Henri Coandă and Băneasa Airports - in the top of the European airports with highest air traffic growth


Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport and Bucharest Băneasa Aurel Vlaicu International Airport were ranked, this week, on top five European airports which have shown the best air traffic growth in 2016, as announced by Airports Council International - Europe.

Thus, for the category of airports that have between 5 and 10 million passengers, Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport recorded a 18,3% growth of air traffic, ranking forth after Berlin Schonefeld Airport, Larnaca (Cyprus), Faro (Portugal), followed by Porto airport.

Băneasa Airport placed third in Europe, but in the category of airports with less than 5 million passengers per year, where the ranking is the following: Oradea, Iași, Bucharest Băneasa (an air traffic increase of 121.8%), Bruges and Kharkov (Ukraine).

In 2016, the list of airports with over 25 million passengers ranks Dublin, Barcelona El Prat, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Madrid. In the category of 10 to 25 million passengers / year, the top ranked airports are Alicante, Malaga, Cologne-Bonn, Warsaw and Birmingham.

Bucharest Airports National Company registered in 2016, on Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport and Bucharest - Băneasa Aurel Vlaicu International Airport, a record of 10,99  million passengers and 120,7 thousand aircraft movements (landings and take offs). Of the total, 10,98 million passangers and 108,2 thousand aircraft movements were recorded on Henri Coandă Airport.

The evolution of the passengers’ number on Bucharest Airports National Company’s two airports exceeds the European general trend. Furthermore, the number of aircraft movements also increased significantly on Bucharest airports, going beyond the European trend once more. Thereby, the number of aircraft movements on Bucharest airports in 2016 increased by almost 11,2% as compared to 2015.

Bucharest Airports National Company commenced functioning on February the 5th, 2010, ensuring the operational coordination and the management of the two airports in Bucharest. The company was set up following the merger of the two companies managing at that time Bucharest’s airports: Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport and Bucharest-Băneasa Aurel Vlaicu International Airport.
